North Carolina Virtual Public School Extends Long-Term Partnership with Discovery Education Serving Students Statewide

Continuation of 8-Year Collaboration Ensures Students and Educators Access to Engaging K-12 Digital Resources

Silver Spring, Md. (January 15, 2020) – The North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) today announced the extension of its 8-year partnership with Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms. This collaboration, which creates dynamic digital learning environments for students across North Carolina with high-quality content from the award-winning Discovery Education Experience, is a critical component of NCVPS’s learning model.

Since its founding in 2007, NCVPS has grown to become the second-largest virtual school in the country.  This growth can be attributed to the ever-expanding set of educational options NCVPS makes available to students, including:

  • hard-to-staff subjects like: Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese,
  • over 150 courses, such as Advanced Placement (AP) and blended courses for the Occupational Course of Study, and
  • opportunities for participating middle schools to offer students a chance to gain high school credit.

This past year, over 57,000 students enrolled in NCVPS courses and 115 North Carolina school districts, over sixty charter schools, plus private and home-schooled students have attended the school.  Today, NCVPS offers six different educational programs: Traditional, Occupational Course of Study, Flex Learning, Math Intervention, Middle School, and English Language Learners

“The North Carolina Virtual Public School is pleased to continue this longtime partnership with Discovery Education,” said NCVPS’s Chief Operations Officer Mia Murphy, Ed.D.  “Discovery Education Experience provides our highly qualified teachers access to best-in-class, engaging digital content that helps them personalize the learning of all the students they serve.”

Discovery Education Experience—the latest iteration of Discovery Education’s popular Streaming Plus service—is a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K–12 curricular areas.  Discovery Education Experience assists educators in creating real-world learning opportunities that engage all students and lead to improved academic achievement.  The service’s standards-aligned content is assignable and can be bookmarked and saved for later use and remixed to meet the varying needs of diverse student populations in a safe and secure environment.  In addition, the service’s up-to-date, high-quality, and ever-growing digital content collections, as well as a library of immersive virtual field trips and viewing parties, are drawn from trusted partners.

Students in elementary, middle and high school that have regular access to Discovery Education’s comprehensive, K-12 digital content service have higher attendance rates and are outpacing their peers on state assessments in reading, mathematics, and social studies. Additional findings tell a consistent story of how access to Discovery Education’s supplemental content services can be linked to higher student achievement, especially for racial/ethnic minorities and students impacted by poverty, disabilities, and limited English proficiency. Click here to learn more.

In addition to providing NCVPS’s educators continued access to Discovery Education Experience, the renewal of this partnership ensures the Discovery Education Community will continue supporting the Virtual School’s teachers. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education’s partnership with the North Carolina Virtual Public School has, for 8 years, ensured students from the Appalachians to the Outer Banks access to rich, multimedia content that captures learners’ attention and drives engagement in instruction,” said Shawn Ferrell, Discovery Education’s Manager of Partner Success. “We look forward to continuing this great collaboration, as it supports our shared mission to support the success of each student.”

MIND Research Institute Unveils All-New Version of ST Math

The latest version of the visual game-based math program features upgraded visuals, improved reporting, and streamlined design for easier implementation and usage

Irvine, Calif., Jan. 9, 2019 — MIND Research Institute, an award-winning neuroscience and education social impact organization dedicated to ensuring that all students are mathematically equipped to solve the world’s most challenging problems, today announced the launch of an all-new version of its flagship solution, ST Math®.

Based on 20 years of neuroscientific research and the belief that every student has the potential to deeply understand and love math, ST Math uses spatial-temporal games to present math concepts visually for students in grades preK–8. This patented approach leverages the brain’s innate spatial-temporal reasoning abilities to solve math problems.

The mastery-based and standards-aligned ST Math offers equitable access to learning through challenging puzzles, non-routine problem solving, and informative feedback. Proving that a game can change how students feel about math, the unique approach delivers robust results on a national scale. Independent education research firm WestEd recently published the largest ever cross-state study evaluating a math edtech program on multiple state assessments. The results were especially significant at the 239 schools that used ST Math consistently. These high-fidelity schools outgrew similar schools in statewide rank by an average of 14 percentile points.

The newest version is built on the latest website technology, featuring responsive design to work seamlessly on any device. Designed to deepen and extend engagement to maximize learning time, the update gives ST Math’s beloved mascot, JiJi, and all the puzzles and environments a fresh new look. The update also allows students to track their logins, minutes played, and puzzles solved each week to improve accountability and intrinsic motivation.

For administrators, ST Math now has more streamlined implementation focused on single sign-on and account provisioning, as well as new reporting tools that offer comprehensive student data to uncover insights and track student learning results.

Improvements for teachers will help them implement the program with greater fidelity, integrate it with core curriculum more easily, and better support student learning. Key features for teachers in the new version include:

  • A simplified user experience to get to improved student learning faster;
  • A new assignments feature, allowing teachers to assign any ST Math objective to individual students, groups, or the whole class outside of their journey, providing increased flexibility to target student needs or align to classroom instruction;
  • Redesigned progress reports and student detail information to more clearly present actionable data for informed instruction;
  • The ability to see the progress of minutes played and puzzles completed during the current week, or as a median of all weeks to track engagement; and
  • The ability to view comprehensive student detail, including a student’s entire history of usage and progress toward standards and objectives, as well as clear alerts for struggling students.

“Our whole team at MIND Research Institute have been hard at work on the new ST Math, and we are so excited for students, teachers, and administrators to experience it,” said Brett Woudenberg, CEO of MIND. “Our partners asked for increased flexibility and even more reporting and student details. The new ST Math delivers all of that and more, helping students and teachers alike to deeply understand and truly love math.”

ST Math meets What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) quasi-experiment and ESSA Tier 2 requirements and has won numerous awards, most recently including two CODiE Awards in 2019 for Best Mathematics Instructional Solution for Grades PreK-8 and Best Overall Education Technology Solution.

To learn more about the new version of ST Math, which is available for the 2020-2021 academic year, go to http://www.stmath.com/whats-new. For those attending FETC, Vice President of Engagement Elizabeth Neiman will be available for meetings and can be reached at eneiman(at)mindresearch(dot)org.

an in-depth examination of the survey results, including real-life case studies, will be
released in two forthcoming reports: Hurdles + Accelerators (Spring 2020) and Tech
Enablers (Summer 2020).

“The Driving K-12 Innovation initiative reaffirms CoSN’s commitment to
providing up-to-date information on how new technologies impact various
education stakeholders. This year, we decided to combine the Hurdles and
Accelerators reports to increase understanding of how the two trends relate
and encourage more nuanced discussions moving forward. We hope this
year’s findings lead to new dialogues about how to transform learning and
improve student outcomes as we look to the future,” said Keith Krueger,
CEO of CoSN.

According to the project, “accelerators” drive teaching and learning innovation in schools,
while “hurdles” hinder it. The top hurdles and accelerators, ranked in order from the most
important to address in 2020 to the least, are:
Hurdles
 Scaling and Sustaining Innovation
 Data Privacy and Ownership
 Evolution of Teaching and Learning
 Pedagogy vs. Technology Gap
 Digital Equity

Accelerators
● Learners as Creators
● Data-Driven Practices
● Personalization
● Social and Emotional Learning
● Building the Human Capacity of Leaders
“Tech enablers” are tools that school districts can leverage to overcome the hurdles and
utilize the accelerators effectively in 2020. The top five tech enablers, ranked in order of
importance, are:
Tech Enablers
 Digital Collaboration Platforms
 Tools for Privacy and Safety Online
 Analytics and Adaptive Technologies
 Cloud Infrastructure
 Mobile Devices
CoSN invites all members to submit their own examples, projects and resources related to
the top two 2020 tech enablers: digital collaboration platforms & tools for privacy and safety
online. Select submissions will be featured on the CoSN website and in future publications.

TypeTastic offers a keyboarding curriculum for students in grades K–12 in an engaging, game-based environment.
