2013 Smithsonian Online Education Conference Series Presents Two Sessions on Astrophotography

Conferences Will Highlight How Scientific Data Helps Tell the Story of the Universe Through Images

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 22, 2013)—Making connections between art and science in the classroom can be a challenging task for teachers, but it can provide students with ways to hone their observation skills, discover connections and experiment with new ideas. The Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access is hosting two online education conferences for teachers and students June 12 and July 10 that showcase astrophotography as a prime example of the intersection of these two subject areas.

Each session features Smithsonian experts presenting free digital-learning resources from the Smithsonian and teaching strategies that educators can use to explore cross-curricular lessons with their students. Experts also will respond to participant questions. An associated digital badge opportunity will be introduced through the Smithsonian Quests (smithsonianquests.org) program. Students can earn the Astrophotographer badge by capturing images of the solar system, stars and galaxies using the telescopes they control remotely online and creating their own images using digital tools to enhance color and light.

Joseph DePasquale and Mary Dussault from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory will present “Understanding Astrophotography: Where Science and Art Meet” Wednesday, June 12, at 1 p.m. EDT. They will demonstrate how scientists transform raw data from telescopes into impressive images that tell a story about the universe.

Dussault, with Lindsay Bartholomew of the Miami Science Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate, will present the second session, “Do-It-Yourself Astrophotography: Applications for the Classroom and Beyond,” Wednesday, July 10, at 4 p.m. EDT. The educator-focused session will highlight techniques that facilitate powerful STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) learning for students through project-based lessons that engage students in creating their own public astrophotography exhibitions.

The 2013 Smithsonian Online Education Conference Series provides an online space for teachers and students to engage with Smithsonian experts and make connections from textbooks to today’s world. For more information, visit http://smithsonianeducationconferences.org/.

Honolulu, HI and Little Falls, MN High Schools Take Home Top Honors in the Council for Economic Education’s 13th Annual National Economics Challenge

Iolani School and Little Falls Community High School Named Champions in Nationwide Competition

NEW YORK, NY MAY 20, 2013 – The Council for Economic Education is thrilled to announce the winners of the 13th Annual National Economics Challenge, a rigorous academic competition putting students’ economic skills and knowledge to the ultimate test. Nailing questions that few adults could answer correctly, Iolani School took home the top prize for the Adam Smith Division (for advanced placement, international baccalaureate and honors students), and Little Falls Community High School was named the winner of the David Ricardo Division (for students who have taken only a single-semester economics course). These teams outpaced over 10,000 other students—double the number of entries from 2011—to win an all-expense paid trip to New York City for a two-day competition to determine the overall champions.  This year’s Challenge is generously supported by State Farm.®

In the National Economics Challenge, CEE applies the excitement of an athletic competition to academic excellence, providing students with the opportunity to apply their economics knowledge and work in teams. Competitions are held at the State, National Semi-Final, and National Final levels in the two divisions.  In each competition, teams of students answer rigorous questions on microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, and current events. At the National Finals, students complete rounds of testing, work in teams during a critical thinking round to solve a case problem, and participate in a quick-paced oral quiz-bowl in order to compete for the title of National Champions.

The four finalist teams face each other in the final round of the National Economics Challenge in a “quiz-bowl” format held in New York City.  Each team must have previously won in its state and been one of the top four highest scoring teams at the National Semi-Finals competition in order to advance to the championship series.

“We’re so impressed with these students’ grasp of today’s increasingly complex economy, and their mastery of economic decision making,” Nan J. Morrison, CEO and President of CEE.  “Congratulations Iolani and Little Falls on your achievements, and for setting the bar high for next year’s competition!”
The eight Finalist teams placed as follows:

ADAM SMITH DIVISION
1st Place: Iolani School | Honolulu, Hawaii
2nd Place: Choate Rosemary Hall | Wallingford, Connecticut
3rd Place: Mounds View High School | Arden Hills, Minnesota
4th Place: Richard Montgomery High School | Rockville, Maryland

DAVID RICARDO DIVISION
1st Place: Little Falls Community High School | Little Falls, Minnesota
2nd Place: Carmel High School | Carmel, Indiana
3rd Place: Olympia High School | Olympia, Washington
4th Place: Lexington High School | Lexington, Massachusetts

Free Education Metadata Workshop Scheduled on June 5

Event will help educational content providers understand best practices for implementing new Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI) specification for increased discoverability

WILMINGTON, DE, May 16, 2013 – On Wednesday, June 5, 2013, from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) will host a free LRMI Workshop following its annual Content in Context (CIC) conference in Washington, D.C. The workshop will provide background information and updates on the Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI), a project co-led by AEP and Creative Commons to create an education-specific extension of the Schema.org web markup standard. Like Schema.org’s goal to improve the general search experience, the LRMI aims to make it easier for educators, students, and others to find precisely the right instructional materials at the right time. The workshop is free and open to both CIC attendees and the general public.

Session topics will include:

  • Publisher perspectives on LRMI and experiences with implementation
  • An overview of other important and emerging education data initiatives
  • Best practices for aligning content to Common Core State Standards (CCSS), as well as other education frameworks
  • Metadata projects that build on the LRMI, including accessibility metadata
  • Processes and plans for evolving the LRMI properties

The day will conclude with a hands-on tagging activity that will walk attendees through the LRMI tagging process. For starters, attendees will learn what properties to use and what values to assign, what constitutes an individual resource, and how best to determine the proper person from their organization to do the tagging. Attendees are encouraged to bring resources or links to resources that they would like to tag.

“This workshop kicks off our year-long LRMI workshop series designed to update everyone on the LRMI project and take the next step toward implementation,” said Dave Gladney, LRMI project manager at AEP. “Individuals and teams in attendance will gain valuable insights and skills that can be applied or transferred immediately within their organizations.”

myON reader Launches 2013 Summer SuperHero Reading Program

Grand Prizes Include iPad for Student, Interactive Whiteboard for School

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - May 15, 2013 - As more states begin to implement strategies to prepare their students for career and college readiness, it’s critical for students to stay academically focused while school is not in session. In a nation-wide survey conducted by the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA), 77% of teachers said that students who participate in a summer learning program are better prepared for school when they return in the fall, and 88% said summer learning is crucial to supporting students’ overall success in school.

To support summer reading, myON™ reader announces the 2013 Summer SuperHero Reading Program. All schools using myON reader, an online personalized literacy environment matching students’ interests and reading levels to recommended enhanced digital books, are encouraged to participate in the summer reading program, which runs May 15 – August 15, 2013.

The 2013 Summer SuperHero Reading Program hopes to encourage students to read over the summer, be rewarded for their efforts, and help build a new love of reading. The program will track time spent reading in two categories of students: grades PreK-5 and grades 6-12. Student prizes will be based on total time spent reading and schools can participate by reading the most books. Steelcase, Variquest and many of the myON publishing partners have agreed to provide prizes for the program. Winners will be announced on the Capstone Connect blog on September 4, 2013.

Among the amazing prizes include:

Student Prizes

·       SuperHero: Wins an Apple® iPad®

·       SuperHero Runner-Up: Wins an Apple® iPad® mini

·       Jr. SuperHero: Wins a Sony® Bloggie™ Touch

School Prizes

·       1st Place: Eno Interactive Whiteboard

·       2nd Place: Variquest Poster Design System

·       3rd Place:  one Elementary School Publisher myON Bundle and one Middle School Publisher myON Bundle

A Summer Reading Toolkit featuring downloadable posters, flyers, login cards, and more is available for all myON customers on the myON portal under the “Learn More” section.

To register and receive more information on the Summer SuperHero Reading Program, visit the contest page. Included are real-life SuperHeroes videos from Former Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts Tony Dungy and his wife Lauren, Assistant Police Chief of the Tampa Bay Department John Bennet, and Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria, encouraging students and families to read over the summer.

“Bottom line, the best remedy for the ‘summer slide’ is to put books in the hands of kids. The opportunity to impact students’ success can be greatly enhanced by providing unlimited opportunities to read and match kids to books that interest them and are at the right level. myON reader provides students with a collection of more than 4,000 enhanced digital books to encourage reading, leverage technology and give anytime access. We want to build momentum around reading and literacy to help build long-term academic achievement for all students.” said Todd Brekhus, president of Capstone Digital.

About myON™

myON reader provides online access to more than 4,000 books with multimedia supports, such as embedded dictionary, highlighting and audio, customized to a student’s interest and reading. Accessible at school or home, the platform creates a collaborative reading environment where students, educators and parents work together to support student reading performance. Students also have access to a safe, social network where they can read, rate, review and recommend books to classmates. Since the platform launched in January 2011, more than 1.4 million students have logged on to read upwards of 4.25 million books. Learn more about myON at www.TheFutureinReading.com.
